This 1957 postcard captures the monument to the prominent Russian composer Mikhail Ivanovich Glinka, erected in Zaporizhzhia in front of the concert hall building.

What is shown on the postcard

The black-and-white image shows the monument to Mikhail Ivanovich Glinka, depicted seated in an armchair. The composer is shown holding a pipe in one hand and sheet music or a rolled newspaper on his lap. His full name (Mikhail Ivanovich Glinka) and years of life (1804-1857) are carved into the granite pedestal. Behind the monument, part of a building facade with large window openings is visible, identified in the caption as a concert hall. To the left of the statue, a decorative element is visible on the building wall.

Historical note

The monument to M.I. Glinka in Zaporizhzhia was unveiled in 1957, commemorating the 100th anniversary of the composer’s death. The sculptor was the renowned Ukrainian sculptor O.O. Skoblykov. The monument was placed in front of the Zaporizhzhia Regional Philharmonic building, which was named after Glinka in the same year. The concert hall building itself was constructed in 1953 and represents a prominent example of Soviet neoclassical architecture.

Present day

Currently, the monument to Mikhail Glinka remains a significant cultural landmark in Zaporizhzhia. The Zaporizhzhia Regional Philharmonic, situated behind the monument, continues to function as the city’s main concert venue, retaining its historical name and cultural importance.
