The 1973 postcard features a panoramic view of the Dnipro Hydroelectric Station (DniproHES) and the V.I. Lenin monument, erected on Lenin Square (now Soborna Square) in Zaporizhzhia.
What is shown on the postcard
The image displays the DniproHES dam in its full extent, traversing the Dnipro River. In the foreground, there is an extensive green park with walking paths and numerous trees, including conifers. In the center of the park stands the monumental V.I. Lenin monument on a tall pedestal, crafted in a strict realistic style. A small body of water or fountain is visible in front of the monument. The view is captured from an elevated position, offering a broad perspective.
Historical note
The Dnipro Hydroelectric Station named after V.I. Lenin, or DniproHES, is one of the largest hydroelectric power plants on the Dnipro River and a symbol of the industrialization of the USSR. Its construction began in 1927 and was completed in 1932. The station played a key role in the industrial development of Zaporizhzhia and the entire region. During World War II, the dam was partially destroyed but was subsequently fully restored and modernized. The V.I. Lenin monument, depicted on the postcard, was erected on the square in front of DniproHES in 1964 and was a dominant feature of the architectural ensemble.
Present day
The Dnipro Hydroelectric Station continues to operate to this day, remaining an important part of Ukraine’s energy infrastructure. The area around the dam remains a well-maintained recreational zone. However, as part of decommunization, the V.I. Lenin monument captured in this postcard was dismantled on March 17, 2016. Lenin Square was also renamed Soborna Square.
