The 1973 postcard depicts the prophylactic sanatorium of the “Dneprospetsstal” plant in Zaporizhzhia, situated on the picturesque bank of the Dnieper River. This establishment served as a place for rest and recuperation for workers and employees of one of the region’s largest metallurgical enterprises.

What is shown on the postcard

The postcard image prominently features a two-story building with distinctive architecture, including columns on the main facade and large window openings. In front of the building, by the water’s edge, a concrete embankment with a balustrade is visible, along with a small rotunda on piles extending into the Dnieper’s waters. To the right of the building, a sandy beach stretches out, and trees grow around it, creating the impression of a park area.

Historical note

The building, known as A.V. Kolomoitsev’s (Kolomeev’s) mansion, was constructed before the revolution, approximately in 1910, and represents early 20th-century architecture. After nationalization and during the Soviet period, it was transferred to the “Dneprospetsstal” plant and repurposed as a sanatorium-profilactorium for the health improvement of workers.

The sanatorium offered workers and their families the opportunity to undergo treatment and rest with minimal interruption to their work. It was located in one of Zaporizhzhia’s most scenic spots, contributing to the quality of rest.

Present day

Currently, the historical building at Verkhnya Street, 11 in Zaporizhzhia retains its architectural value. It has undergone reconstruction and now operates as the “Porto Riva” hotel and restaurant complex and the “Zamak” Art Center. The complex continues to utilize its scenic location on the Dnieper’s bank, offering leisure and recreation services. The rotunda on the water has also been restored or modernized.
