This postcard from 1984 presents a panorama of the central part of Zaporizhzhia, focusing on two significant city buildings: Restaurant “Russia” and the M.I. Glinka Concert Hall.

What is shown on the postcard

The image captures two architectural objects. On the left is a building designed in a modernist style, with the prominent sign “РОССИЯ” (RUSSIA) on its roof, identifying it as the eponymous restaurant. On the right, a neoclassical building with massive columns, a pediment, and decorative elements is visible, which is the M.I. Glinka Concert Hall. Both structures are surrounded by green vegetation, including trees and shrubs, and a segment of the urban landscape is present in the frame.

Historical note

The M.I. Glinka Concert Hall, now the Zaporizhzhia Regional Philharmonic, was constructed in 1953 based on the design by architect Georgiy Velychko. The building is a prominent example of the Stalinist Empire style, characteristic of post-war urban reconstruction. Restaurant “Russia,” built in a later period and executed in a modernist style, was one of Zaporizhzhia’s major public catering establishments and was often associated with the Intourist Hotel complex.

Present day

The M.I. Glinka Concert Hall continues to operate as the Zaporizhzhia Regional Philharmonic, remaining an important cultural center of the city. The building regularly hosts concerts and cultural events. The building of the former Restaurant “Russia” still exists, but its functional purpose and name have undergone numerous changes since the collapse of the Soviet Union, and it is currently used for other commercial or public purposes.
