What is shown on the postcard

The image depicts the massive, arch-curved concrete dam with visible spillway sections. An automotive road runs along the top of the dam, with trucks moving across it, along with pedestrians and street lamps. In the distance on the horizon, buildings are visible on the opposite bank of the Dnipro River, surrounded by forested terrain.

Historical note

Construction of DniproHES began in 1927 and was completed in 1932, becoming a key project of the GOELRO plan and a symbol of Soviet industrialization. During World War II, the station held strategic importance and was partially destroyed in 1941 by retreating Soviet troops, and then again in 1943 by German forces. After the war, it was completely rebuilt and by 1962, the postcard’s publication date, it had been fully operational for many years, providing the region with electricity and serving as an important transportation crossing.

Present day

Currently, DniproHES continues to be a pivotal object of Ukraine’s energy system and an important transport hub, providing road communication between the right and left banks of the Dnipro River. The station has undergone multiple modernizations, maintaining its functionality and significance for the region. DniproHES remains one of the country’s largest hydroelectric power stations.
