This 1989 postcard showcases the architectural appearance of one of the buildings of the renowned N. Ostrovsky Sanatorium in Evpatoria, known as an all-Union children’s resort.

What is shown on the postcard

The foreground of the postcard features a multi-story building with distinctive terraced architecture, typical for Soviet-era health resort complexes designed to maximize exposure to sunlight and sea air. The building’s facade is in light tones, with numerous windows and balconies arranged in a stepped fashion. In front of the building extends a well-maintained park with lush vegetation, including shrubs, trees, and lawns, through which pedestrian paths wind. In the background, to the right, a dome and elements of the facade of a religious structure are faintly visible.

Historical note

The N. Ostrovsky Sanatorium in Evpatoria was one of the largest and oldest children’s sanatoriums on the Crimean Peninsula, founded in the early 20th century. It specialized in treating children with musculoskeletal disorders, rheumatism, and other ailments, utilizing Evpatoria’s unique natural factors – the maritime climate, therapeutic muds, and brine. The sanatorium was named in honor of the Soviet writer Nikolai Ostrovsky. During the Soviet era, it was part of an extensive system of children’s health resorts, where children from all over the USSR came for recovery and treatment.

The architecture of the depicted building reflects the trends of the late Soviet period in resort construction, where functionality and adaptation to climatic conditions (e.g., terraced balconies for insolation) were combined with monumental design.

Present day

Following the collapse of the Soviet Union, the N. Ostrovsky Sanatorium, like many other health resorts in Evpatoria, underwent a series of reorganizations and changes. Currently, its territory and buildings are integrated into the Central Military Clinical Sanatorium named after N.I. Pirogov of the Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation. The complex continues to function as a large multidisciplinary medical and prophylactic institution, maintaining its specialization and infrastructure. Buildings similar to the one shown on the postcard, continue to be used for accommodating guests and conducting medical procedures, having undergone partial reconstruction and modernization.
