Card Mass grave of soldiers and members of the underground in the labor area, Gomel, 1979

A 1979 Soviet collectible postcard capturing the monument at the Mass Grave of Soviet Soldiers and Underground Fighters, located on Labor Square in Gomel.

What is shown on the postcard

The shot shows a close-up of the central section of the memorial complex. A bronze sculpture of a soldier holding a submachine gun is mounted on a tall, four-sided grey granite pedestal. A relief five-pointed star is attached to the front of the pedestal. In front of the monument, there are lawns and flowerbeds separated by concrete slabs, with a decorative wreath visible in the foreground. Tall deciduous trees form the background, partially obscuring a residential building with a rooftop sign.

Historical note

The mass grave on Labor Square (formerly Cathedral Square) was established during World War II. It holds the remains of Soviet soldiers who fell during the liberation of Gomel in November 1943, as well as local underground resistance fighters and partisans. The monument in its current form (the soldier sculpture) was erected in 1950. Later, in the 1970s, the memorial was reconstructed, and the Eternal Flame was lit.

Present day

Today, the memorial complex on Labor Square is maintained in excellent condition. It remains a key location for commemorative events in Gomel dedicated to the events of World War II. The composition of the monument and the surrounding landscape design have been preserved almost entirely in their original form.
