What is shown on the postcard

In the right foreground, the dark silhouette of the Monument to Volodymyr the Great holding a cross is visible. The background reveals a panorama of the Dnieper River with sunlight reflecting on its surface. A metal pedestrian bridge spans the river, leading to Trukhaniv Island. A small motor vessel sails on the water, leaving a white wake behind.

Historical note

The Monument to Volodymyr the Great, erected in 1853 by sculptors Vasily Demut-Malinovsky and Peter Clodt, alongside architect Konstantin Thon, is the oldest sculptural monument in Kyiv. The Pedestrian Bridge over the Dnieper was built relatively recently before this photograph was taken, in 1957, connecting the city center with the recreational area on Trukhaniv Island.

Present day

Today, Volodymyr Hill and the Monument to Volodymyr remain key landmarks of Kyiv. The Pedestrian Bridge is fully operational and popular among locals. The landscape of the Dnieper’s left bank has transformed significantly over the decades due to modern residential developments.
