A 1970 postcard showing Peremohy (Victory) Square in Kyiv, capturing the building of the Kyiv State Circus and the surrounding Soviet-era urban infrastructure.

What is shown on the postcard

The image shows Peremohy Square from the eastern side. On the right, the monumental domed building of the Kyiv State Circus with a colonnade at the entrance is partially visible. In the center and on the left, busy streets with buses, trolleybuses, and cars are shown. In the foreground, there is an open parking lot filled with vintage Soviet cars, including Volga and Moskvitch models. Multi-story residential buildings of Soviet design are visible in the background.

Historical note

Peremohy Square (historically known as Halytska Square) emerged in the second half of the 19th century as a marketplace on the city’s outskirts. During the Soviet period, it underwent extensive reconstruction. The monumental Kyiv State Circus building, designed by architect Valentyn Zhukov to seat 2,000 spectators, opened in 1960 and was the largest circus facility in the USSR at the time.

Present day

In 2023, the square was officially renamed back to its historical name, Halytska Square. The building of the National Circus of Ukraine has preserved its original architectural appearance and continues to operate. The surrounding area has changed, with increased traffic flow and the reorganization of the former open-air parking lot in front of the circus.
