This 1983 postcard features the Main Pavilion of the Exhibition of Achievements of the National Economy of BSSR (VDNKh BSSR) in Minsk, showcasing Soviet modernist architecture and samples of industrial production.

What is shown on the postcard

The left side of the postcard depicts the Main Pavilion of VDNKh BSSR, characterized by its glass facade and rhythmic roof decoration. In front of the building, a paved square is visible with several people. The right side of the postcard shows a large yellow quarry dump truck, likely produced by one of the BSSR’s industrial enterprises, set against other exhibition complex buildings and city architecture in the background.

Historical note

The Exhibition of Achievements of the National Economy of BSSR was opened in Minsk in 1968 on Masherov Avenue (now Pobediteley Avenue). The VDNKh complex was intended to showcase the republic’s achievements in industry, agriculture, science, and culture. The Main Pavilion, designed by architects S.M. Kamenschikov and A.V. Zheldakov, became a prominent example of Soviet modernist architecture.

Exhibitions were held annually, presenting advanced achievements and developments. The postcard illustrates a typical exhibit of that era – heavy machinery, symbolizing the republic’s industrial might, specifically products from BelAZ.

Present day

After the collapse of the USSR, the VDNKh BSSR complex was transformed into the National Exhibition Center “BelExpo”. The Main Pavilion has retained its function and appearance, continuing to host international and national exhibitions, forums, and congresses. The area around the pavilion has been landscaped, but the main architectural elements of the complex remain recognizable.
