Card V.I. Lenin Square. Agricultural Institute building, Dnepropetrovsk, 1983

The 1983 postcard features the central architectural ensemble of Dnipropetrovsk, including V.I. Lenin Square and the Agricultural Institute building. The image reflects the urban planning context of the Soviet period, showcasing monumental structures and well-maintained urban environment.

What is shown on the postcard

In the foreground of the left part of the postcard, the monument to V.I. Lenin is visible, erected on a high pedestal. Behind it stands the massive multi-story building of the Agricultural Institute, constructed in the Stalinist Empire style with elements of classicism, featuring a characteristic tower section and a star on its facade. The well-maintained square in front of the building includes green spaces and flowerbeds with red blooms. Pedestrians are seen walking across the square.

The right part of the postcard displays a modern high-rise building with numerous windows, typical of Soviet modernist architecture from the 1960s-1970s. In front of this building, there are also flowerbeds with red flowers, and cars are visible on the roadway.

Historical note

V.I. Lenin Square, now Heroes of Maidan Square, served as the central square of Dnipropetrovsk. The Lenin monument, sculpted by M.G. Manizer, was unveiled in 1957. The Agricultural Institute building, constructed in the 1920s-1930s, became one of the dominant architectural structures of the square. Following a reconstruction in the 1950s, the square acquired its recognizable appearance. The high-rise building on the right is the House of Trade Unions, erected in 1970, which is also a characteristic example of Soviet functionalism.

Present day

After Ukraine gained independence, and particularly after the events of 2013-2014, the city underwent significant changes. In 2014, the V.I. Lenin monument was dismantled, and in 2016, V.I. Lenin Square was renamed Heroes of Maidan Square. The city of Dnipropetrovsk was renamed Dnipro. The Agricultural Institute building continues to be used as the main building of the Dnipro State Agrarian and Economic University. The House of Trade Unions also retains its functionality, although its exterior and surrounding area may have undergone some modifications.
