Historical note
Uzhhorod Castle is the city’s oldest defensive structure, with its origins dating back to the Middle Ages. The fortress acquired its present-day appearance with bastions during the 16th and 17th centuries, when it was rebuilt by Italian engineers under the Drugeth family. In 1947, during the Soviet period, the castle palace became home to the Transcarpathian Regional Local History Museum.
Present day
Today, the castle is Uzhhorod’s primary landmark and continues to house the Transcarpathian Regional Museum named after Tyvodar Lehotsky. The entire architectural complex, including the fortifications, moat, and inner palace, is preserved as a monument of national cultural heritage.
