This 1979 vintage postcard depicts the monumental Palace of Culture “Ukraina” in Kyiv, an outstanding monument of Soviet modernism.
What is shown on the postcard
The image shows the main facade of the Palace of Culture, clad in light stone and glass. In front of the building is a spacious paved square with pedestrians. In the left part of the frame, wide double-flight stairs leading to the stylobate are visible. To the right, a tall flagpole flies the flag of the Ukrainian SSR, with a street and streetlights running alongside it.
Historical note
The Palace of Culture “Ukraina” was officially opened on April 17, 1970. The design of the building was developed by architects Ye. Marynchenko, P. Zhalytskyi, and Yo. Ivanov. The main hall was originally designed for 3,714 seats and was intended for state socio-political and cultural events, including congresses of the Communist Party of Ukraine.
Present day
In 1998, the venue received national status and was renamed the National Palace of Arts “Ukraina”. Today, the building continues to serve as the country’s primary concert and state event venue, retaining its original architectural appearance.
