A 1968 collectible postcard featuring a panoramic view of the builders’ settlement of the Kanev Hydroelectric Power Plant in Kanev, Cherkasy Oblast.

What is shown on the postcard

The image captures a panorama of a residential microdistrict with five-story apartment blocks of Khrushchev-era architecture. In the foreground, single-story private houses with gardens are nestled among dense green trees. In the background, the Dnieper River is visible with a cargo barge sailing on it, and the flat opposite bank stretches into the distance.

Historical note

The construction of the Kanev HPP began in 1962–1963. To provide housing for thousands of builders, engineers, and their families, a new residential district consisting primarily of typical brick five-story buildings was erected in the northern part of Kanev. The area was equipped with its own infrastructure, including schools and shops.

Present day

Today, the former builders’ settlement is an established residential neighborhood of Kanev (located around Enerhetykiv and Dniprova streets). The Soviet-era five-story buildings remain in use as residential housing. The landscape of the Dnieper shoreline changed significantly after the completion of the dam and the filling of the Kanev Reservoir.
