This 1980 Soviet souvenir postcard depicts the “Mlyn” (Windmill) restaurant, once located in Kyiv’s Hydropark on the banks of the Dnieper River.
What is shown on the postcard
The two-part postcard shows elements of the restaurant complex. On the left, the main entrance of a single-story pavilion features a modernist mosaic on its facade, with a decorative wooden windmill rising on a grassy hill behind it. Two Soviet passenger cars, a VAZ-2101 and a VAZ-2102 station wagon, are parked in front. On the right, decorative park structures with thatched roofs, styled after traditional Ukrainian peasant cottages, are shown; one features folk paintings depicting a Cossack.
Historical note
The “Mlyn” restaurant was built in the 1960s in the picturesque park zone on Venetian Island (Hydropark). The venue’s design concept combined Soviet modernist architecture with traditional Ukrainian national style. The main visual landmark of the complex was a reconstructed 18-meter-tall wooden windmill, clearly visible from the river.
Present day
During the post-Soviet period, the restaurant continued to operate but underwent several renovations. In 2015, a major fire broke out in the wooden structures of the complex, resulting in the near-total destruction of the main buildings.
