This 1970 postcard depicts the architectural ensemble of the main entrance to the VDNKh of the Ukrainian SSR in Kyiv.
What is shown on the postcard
The image shows two symmetrical entrance pavilions (propylaea) with colonnades forming the grand entrance. Inscriptions in Ukrainian are visible on the pylons. Beyond them, a central alley with flowerbeds and an active fountain leads to the Main Pavilion, topped by a tall spire with a star. Groups of visitors in summer attire are seen in the foreground and along the pathways.
Historical note
The exhibition complex was officially opened on July 6, 1958, under the name Exhibition of Advanced Experience in the National Economy of the UkSSR. Construction began in 1952 on the southern outskirts of Kyiv, adjacent to the Holosiivskyi Forest. The venue was designed to showcase the economic and scientific achievements of Soviet Ukraine.
Present day
Today, the complex operates as the National Expocenter of Ukraine (VDNG). Most of the original pavilions, including the main entrance and the Main Pavilion with its spire, have preserved their original Soviet Neoclassical architectural design and are listed as monuments of architecture.
