What is shown on the postcard
The foreground features the multi-story modernist building of the institute with ribbon glazing on the facade. Soviet-made passenger cars, including Zhiguli, Moskvich, and Zaporozhets, are parked near the entrance. Pedestrians are walking on the sidewalks and along Mechnykova Street. The right side of the image shows green tree canopies and the edge of a bridge.
Historical note
The Odesa Institute of Marine Fleet Engineers was founded in 1930 as the Odesa Institute of Water Transport Engineers. In 1945, it was renamed OIIMF and became a leading higher education institution in the USSR for training marine industry specialists. The high-rise building shown on the postcard was constructed during the Soviet era to expand the institute’s academic facilities.
Present day
In 1994, the institution received university status and was renamed the Odesa State Maritime University, and in 2002 it became the Odesa National Maritime University (ONMU). The building retains its original function and continues to be used for training maritime transport specialists.
