What is shown on the postcard
The left side of the postcard depicts the central entrance to the Hill of Glory, framed by two monumental grey granite pylons topped with bronze flags. A group of visitors is walking along the paved alley. The right side shows a bronze monument of a soldier holding a banner (“The Oath”), installed on a granite pedestal over the mass grave of tankmen.
Historical note
The Hill of Glory memorial was designed in the post-war years to bury Soviet soldiers who fell during the battles for Lviv. The reconstructed complex was opened in 1952. The monument “The Oath” above the mass grave of tank crews was created by the Soviet sculptor I. Pershudchev. Members of the crew of the legendary tank “Gvardiya” are buried here.
Present day
In the contemporary period, the memorial complex has undergone significant changes due to decommunization laws in Ukraine. Soviet symbols, including elements of the monuments and Soviet stars, have been dismantled, and some graves and sculptures are planned for relocation or have already been moved to other city cemeteries.
