Card The building which housed the Red Army club. Brest Fortress, 1972

A 1972 Soviet postcard depicting the illuminated ruins of the former Red Army Club in the Brest Fortress at night.

What is shown on the postcard

The postcard features a night view of a semi-ruined brick building of the former club with arched openings, lit from below by spotlights. A red flag flies at the top of the ruins. To the right in the background, the silhouette of the memorial complex’s main bayonet obelisk is visible.

At the bottom of the postcard, there is a white margin featuring an illustration of the “Gold Star” medal and the inscription “Brest Hero-Fortress” in several languages.

Historical note

The building shown on the postcard was originally constructed in the second half of the 19th century as the St. Nicholas Garrison Cathedral. During the Soviet period, it was converted into the garrison club of the 84th Infantry Regiment. During the defense of the Brest Fortress in June 1941, the club was one of the key defense points in the Citadel, suffering severe damage.

In 1971, the ruins of the church-club were integrated into the newly established “Brest Hero-Fortress” memorial complex.

Present day

Today, the building has been fully restored to its original appearance as the Orthodox Garrison Church of St. Nicholas the Wonderworker.

It is an active cathedral of the Brest Eparchy of the Belarusian Orthodox Church and a prominent historical site within the Citadel of the Brest Fortress.
