This 1973 Soviet postcard depicts the administrative center of Brest, featuring the Regional Executive Committee building and the adjacent public square.
What is shown on the postcard
The image shows a monumental four-story administrative building of the Executive Committee with a columned main entrance. State flags and red stars are installed on the roof. In the foreground is a well-kept public garden with neatly trimmed green hedges, lawns, and flowerbeds. To the right, a tall red commemorative stele reading ’50 Years of the USSR’ is visible. In the background, behind the trees, the dome of a historic bank building can be seen. Several Soviet-era passenger cars are traveling along the street.
Historical note
The Brest Regional Executive Committee building was erected in the late 1950s during the post-war reconstruction of the city’s central square (Lenin Square, previously named after Józef Piłsudski during the Polish period). It defined the new Soviet administrative layout of the square. The historic domed building visible in the background is the former Bank of Poland, designed by the prominent architect Marian Lalewicz and constructed in 1926.
Present day
Today, the building continues to serve its original administrative purpose, housing the Brest Regional Executive Committee. While the overall architectural ensemble of Lenin Square has been preserved, the Soviet-era commemorative steles have been removed, and the surrounding square and roads have undergone modern renovation.
