This Soviet postcard from 1985 depicts the main administrative building of the Kherson Cotton Combine (KhBK), once one of the largest textile enterprises in the USSR.
What is shown on the postcard
The foreground features a landscaped lawn with flowerbeds and a tall stele topped with the inscription “СССР” (USSR) and an depiction of the Order of Lenin at its base. Behind the monument stands the four-story administrative building of the combine, adorned with the sign “ОРДЕНА ЛЕНИНА ТЕКСТИЛЬНЫЙ КОМБИНАТ”. A red-and-white trolleybus is seen driving on the left, and several pedestrians are on the sidewalks.
Historical note
Construction of the Kherson Cotton Combine began in 1952, and the first production stage was launched in December 1954. In 1966, the enterprise was awarded the Order of Lenin for its high productivity. The combine played a key role in the urban development of Kherson’s Tavriiskyi district.
Present day
In the post-Soviet era, production declined significantly, leading to the complete shutdown of the enterprise by the early 2010s. Part of the former production halls was converted into the “Fabrika” shopping mall, which suffered severe damage in 2022 during military actions.
