Card Sverdlov st. Kyiv, 1962

This 1962 Soviet postcard captures a view of Sverdlova Street (now Proreznaya Street) in Kyiv, ascending uphill from Khreshchatyk.

What is shown on the postcard

The foreground shows a wide roadway and sidewalks with pedestrians. On the left stands a multi-story administrative building in the Soviet Neoclassical style, featuring tall arched windows and a colonnade. On the right, a residential building with a deep archway and balconies is visible. Young trees line the street, and post-war residential buildings can be seen on the hill in the background.

Historical note

Proreznaya Street was laid out in the 1830s. During the Soviet period, from 1919 to 1990 (with interruptions), it was named after Yakov Sverdlov. During World War II, the buildings at the beginning of the street were almost completely destroyed. In the 1950s, this block was rebuilt as part of the unified architectural ensemble of the new Khreshchatyk, designed by leading Soviet architects.

Present day

In 1990, the street was officially renamed back to its historical name, Proreznaya. Today, the post-war architecture depicted on the postcard remains intact. The street connects Khreshchatyk with Volodymyrska Street and serves as an important transportation and pedestrian route in central Kyiv.
