What is shown on the postcard
The left side of the postcard features a busy street with pedestrians, Soviet passenger cars (including VAZ-2101 and ZAZ-968), and a tram. In the background, historical multi-story buildings and green slopes are visible. The right side demonstrates the monumental facade of the City Arsenal with its characteristic stone masonry of the lower tier, a plastered red upper part, arched openings, and a cobblestone-paved area with concrete flower beds in front of the entrance.
Historical note
The City Arsenal in Lviv is a 16th-century fortification constructed of stone and brick. In 1981, shortly before this postcard was published, the restored arsenal building opened as the Weapons Museum (“Arsenal”), a branch of the Lviv Historical Museum. 1 May Street (during the Soviet period) is the city’s oldest main thoroughfare, currently named Horodotska Street.
Present day
Today, the City Arsenal retains its historical appearance and continues to operate as the Weapons Museum. The surrounding area is a popular pedestrian zone. Horodotska Street (formerly 1 May Street) remains one of Lviv’s key transport arteries.
