Historical note
The opera house was built in 1901, designed by architect Victor Shreter to replace the Municipal Theatre that had burned down. The design combines Neo-Renaissance elements with Art Nouveau. During the Soviet era, the theater was named after Taras Shevchenko and granted academic status.
Present day
Today, the theater is known as the National Opera of Ukraine named after T. G. Shevchenko. The building preserved its historical appearance through a major reconstruction in the 1980s and remains the country’s premier opera venue.
