What is shown on the postcard
The postcard depicts a four-story residential apartment building designed in the Stalinist Neoclassical style. Historical note
The depicted street is the main historical thoroughfare of Poltava. From 1945 to 1961, it was named Stalin Street. It was subsequently renamed Zhovtneva (October) Street, and in 2016, it was renamed Sobornosti Street. During World War II, the central part of the city was heavily destroyed. The architectural ensemble shown in the image was constructed during the post-war reconstruction of the city center in the late 1940s and 1950s.
Present day
Today, Sobornosti Street is partially pedestrianized and remains Poltava’s central public space. The architectural appearance of these mid-20th-century residential buildings has been largely preserved, though the ground floors have been converted into commercial spaces, shops, and cafes. The trees planted in the 1950s have grown to form a dense green canopy.
