A Soviet postcard from 1973, capturing a busy section of Sovietska Street in the city of Voroshilovgrad (now Luhansk).

What is shown on the postcard

The image shows the roadway of Sovietska Street with a ZiU-5 trolleybus (running number 52) and a red-and-white LAZ bus. On the left side of the street stands a nine-story residential building topped with the sign “СЛАВА ЛЕНИНУ” (Glory to Lenin). Young poplars and decorative hedges line the wide sidewalks, and several pedestrians are visible.

Historical note

In 1973, the city was named Voroshilovgrad (renamed in 1970 following the death of K. E. Voroshilov, and reverted to its historical name Luhansk in 1990). Sovietska Street was and remains one of the city’s key transport and administrative thoroughfares. This era was marked by active residential construction and the expansion of the municipal trolleybus network.

Present day

Today, Sovietska Street remains the central transit artery of Luhansk. Its visual appearance has changed: Soviet-era slogans have been removed from rooftops, trees have grown significantly, public transport has been modernized, and the ground floors of residential blocks now host contemporary retail businesses.
