What is shown on the postcard
The image shows the main facade of the Poltava-Pivdenna (Poltava Southern) railway station. The architectural style of the building is Soviet Neoclassicism, featuring a monumental entrance arch decorated with relief elements and a clock above the entrance. In front of the station, the station square is visible with several Soviet passenger cars from the late 1940s and 1950s parked. Historical note
The first station building on this site was opened in 1870 in connection with the construction of the Kharkiv-Mykolaiv railway line. During World War II, the old station was completely destroyed. The new monumental building shown on this postcard was constructed in 1947–1948 according to the design of architect Z. Kotlyarova, becoming a key symbol of the city’s post-war reconstruction.
Present day
Today, the Poltava-Pivdenna station building continues to serve its original purpose, hosting passenger and commuter trains. The station complex has been renovated, preserving its mid-20th-century historical facades and decorative elements.
