A 1979 Soviet collectible postcard depicting the main building of the Karpaty Sanatorium (former hunting castle of the Counts of Schönborn) located in the Mukachevo Raion, Zakarpattia Oblast.
What is shown on the postcard
The image shows the facade of a two-story Neo-Romantic palace with high chimneys, a pointed spire tower, and decorative clocks. Part of the facade is densely covered with green ivy. In front of the central entrance, there is a formal garden with trimmed evergreen hedges and blooming rose bushes. In the foreground, visitors dressed in late 1970s fashion are walking along an asphalt path.
Historical note
The Beregvár Hunting Castle was built by the Counts of Schönborn between 1890 and 1895, designed by architect Z. Gessner in the style of the French Renaissance. A notable feature of the building is its calendar-themed architecture: it has 365 windows (for the days of the year), 52 rooms (weeks), and 12 entrances (months). Since 1946, the former estate has functioned as the “Karpaty” climatic sanatorium, specializing in cardiovascular treatment.
Present day
Today, the Schönborn Palace remains in use as one of the buildings of the functioning Karpaty Sanatorium and is a highly popular tourist landmark. The palace has been preserved almost in its original state, including its unique exterior and interior architectural features, and is surrounded by a large landscaped arboretum with rare tree species.
