What is shown on the postcard
The image shows the modernist three-story building of the “Russia” department store. Large illuminated letters spelling out “РОССИЯ” and “УНИВЕРМАГ” are mounted on the roof, alongside a central decorative emblem. In front of the facade is a wide pedestrian plaza made of concrete slabs, complete with steps, small lawns with young spruce trees, and street lamps. Historical note
The large “Russia” shopping center in Voroshilovgrad was opened in the 1970s in the eastern part of the city (50 Let Oktyabrya Quarter). The building was designed in the Soviet architectural modernism style, characterized by extensive glass facade glazing and simple rectangular geometric shapes. It served as one of the major retail hubs in the city during the late Soviet era.
Present day
The building has survived to this day, undergoing only minor changes to its facade details and signage. Currently, the premises of the former state department store are rented out to various private commercial businesses and supermarkets, though the structure retains its original retail purpose and recognizable appearance.
