A 1978 Soviet postcard capturing the central part of Rivne with its characteristic modernist residential development from the 1970s.
What is shown on the postcard
The image shows the city’s main street with three multi-story residential buildings made of light brick. A cafe is located on the ground floor of the leftmost building. On the roof of the middle building, the Soviet slogan ‘Slava KPSS’ (Glory to the CPSU) is visible. Red Škoda 9Tr trolleybuses and a VAZ-2101 passenger car are moving along the street. In the foreground, pedestrians are crossing the street near road markings and a traffic light.
Historical note
During the 1970s, the main street of Rivne (then named Lenina Street, now Soborna Street) was actively developed with multi-story residential buildings based on standard Soviet designs with commercial spaces on the ground floors. This section near Teatralna Square became a showcase of Soviet modernism in the city. Trolleybus service in Rivne was launched in 1974, with Czechoslovak Škoda 9Tr vehicles forming the backbone of the city’s fleet.
Present day
Today, Soborna Street remains the main transport artery of Rivne. The nine-story buildings have survived, though their facades have been altered by individual apartment insulation and modern advertising banners. The ground floors continue to host various shops and cafes.
