The image shows the main facade of the theater building in the Soviet Neoclassical style. It features a monumental portico with Corinthian columns, a deep loggia with arched openings, and a triangular pediment adorned with a multi-figure high relief. In front of the building, there is a paved square with pedestrians, streetlights, and poster stands. The corner of a multi-story residential building is visible in the background on the left.
Historical note
The construction of the new music and drama theater building in Poltava took place between 1953 and 1958, based on a design by architects O. Krylova and O. Malyshenko. The theater opened in November 1958 to coincide with the anniversary of the writer Nikolai Gogol, after whom the institution was named. The architectural design is a prominent example of post-war Soviet neoclassicism.
Present day
Today, the building retains its historical appearance and original function. It is officially known as the Poltava Academic Regional Ukrainian Music and Drama Theater named after M.V. Gogol. The facade and the adjacent Theater Square (now part of Sobornosti Street) have been restored, and the building is protected as an architectural monument.
