This 1981 Soviet postcard depicts the “Spartak” open-air swimming pool located in Pidzamkovyi Park in Uzhhorod.

What is shown on the postcard

In the foreground, the outdoor pool basin with clear water is visible, divided into swimming lanes. Several people are swimming, and a water polo goal is installed near the far end. On the right stands a two-story functionalist sports building with open galleries and a decorative relief on its side wall. Tall pyramidal poplars rise behind the building and pool area.

Historical note

The swimming pool in Pidzamkovyi Park (formerly Gorky Park) was established during the interwar period when Transcarpathia was part of Czechoslovakia. Initially operating as a military bath, it later opened to the general public under the name “Štrand.” During the Soviet era, the facility was modernized, renamed “Spartak,” and served both as a popular recreational spot for citizens and a training base for professional swimmers and water polo teams.

Present day

In the post-Soviet period, the “Spartak” complex fell into disrepair and remained inactive for many years. Later, the territory was leased, and the pool underwent a major reconstruction. Today, a modernized private sports and recreation complex named “Aquarelle” (formerly “Spartak”) operates on the site, preserving the general layout of the historic sports zone.
