A 1970 postcard showing the main building of the Lviv Polytechnic Institute (currently Lviv Polytechnic National University).

What is shown on the postcard

The postcard depicts the main facade of the educational building in the Neo-Renaissance style. It features a portico with six Corinthian columns, a balcony, an attic with a sculptural group, and the Latin inscription “Litteris et Artibus”. Dense trees grow in front of the building, and pedestrians walk along the sidewalk next to the fence. Soviet-era street kiosks are visible on the right in the foreground.

Historical note

The main building was designed by the prominent architect Julian Zachariewicz. Construction took place between 1873 and 1877. The building became a major compositional landmark of the Novyi Svit neighborhood. The sculptural decoration on the attic, symbolizing Engineering, Architecture, and Mechanics, was created by Leonard Marconi. During the Soviet period, the institute significantly expanded its infrastructure, remaining one of the largest technical universities in the Ukrainian SSR.

Present day

Today, the building serves as the main building of Lviv Polytechnic National University. This architectural monument of national significance is in good condition, preserving its historic facade decor and interior design, including the assembly hall with paintings by Jan Matejko.
