Historical note
The Luhansk (known as Voroshilovgrad in 1935–1958 and 1970–1990) Pedagogical Institute was founded in 1923 as the Donets Institute of Public Education. It achieved institute status in 1934. The modernist campus buildings on Oboronna Street shown on the postcard were constructed in the post-war period to accommodate the growing student body. In 1939, the institute was named after Taras Shevchenko.
Present day
Today, this building complex belongs to the Taras Shevchenko National University of Luhansk. The historical academic buildings remain intact, though they have undergone cosmetic facade renovations. The surrounding vegetation has grown significantly, partially obstructing the view from the specific angle captured in the 1973 postcard.
