What is shown on the postcard
The foreground depicts Theater Square with pedestrians in summer attire and a dark green retro car (likely a GAZ-20 “Pobeda”). On the right, a wooden kiosk is visible. In the background stands the monumental three-story Neo-Renaissance facade of the theatre, featuring an arched portal, balustrades, and a dome. Historical note
The Kyiv Opera House was constructed in 1897–1901 based on the design of architect Victor Schröter, replacing the city theatre that had burned down. The building was renowned for its outstanding acoustics and advanced technical equipment for its time. In 1939, the theatre was named after Taras Shevchenko.
Present day
Today, it is the National Opera of Ukraine, the country’s premier opera stage. Between 1983 and 1988, the building underwent a major reconstruction that expanded the stage, renovated the interiors, and restored the facade. The structure has preserved its historic appearance and continues to serve its original purpose.
