What is shown on the postcard

The image shows a semicircular square with the “To the Potemkin Sailors from Descendants” monument in the center. In the background, historic residential buildings from the late 19th and early 20th centuries with ornate facades are visible. The foreground features a roadway with a parked vintage passenger car (GAZ-21), a few pedestrians, and green trees.

Historical note

The monument dedicated to the mutiny on the battleship Potemkin was unveiled in Odessa in 1965, marking the 60th anniversary of the event. It replaced the previously destroyed monument to the Founders of Odessa. During the Soviet era, the square was named after Karl Marx.

Present day

In 2007, during the reconstruction of the square, the Potemkin monument was dismantled and relocated to Customs Square (Mytna Square) near the Port of Odessa. The Monument to the Founders of Odessa was restored in its original place, only to be dismantled later in late 2022.
