What is shown on the postcard
The image depicts the three-story main building of the institute, constructed in the Stalinist Neoclassical style. The facade is adorned with a monumental portico with columns, a round clock above the central entrance, and the inscription “ИНСТИТУТ имени В.П. ФИЛАТОВА” on the attic. Several pedestrians are visible near the entrance, and the building is framed by tall green trees on both sides.
Historical note
The institute was founded in 1936 on the initiative of the prominent Soviet ophthalmologist and surgeon, Academician Vladimir Petrovich Filatov. The complex of buildings on Frantsuzsky Boulevard (known as Proletarsky Boulevard in the Soviet era) was constructed in the late 1930s. The institute became the largest research and clinical center for ophthalmology in the USSR, pioneering corneal transplantation and tissue therapy methods.
Present day
Today, the institution continues to operate as the State Institution “The Filatov Institute of Eye Diseases and Tissue Therapy of the National Academy of Medical Sciences of Ukraine.” The historic main building has preserved its architectural design and remains in active use as a leading medical and scientific facility in the country.
