This collectible 1981 postcard presents a view of the Odesa Archaeological Museum building, an outstanding architectural monument of the late 19th century.

What is shown on the postcard

The image shows the main facade of the building with an expressive four-column Corinthian portico, bearing the inscription ‘МУЗЕЙ’ (MUSEUM) on its frieze. On the left, near the steps leading to the main entrance, two human figures are captured. The composition is framed by tree branches on both sides, with a classic street lamp installed on the left.

Historical note

The museum building was constructed in 1882–1883 according to the design of the well-known architect Felix Gonsiorovsky. Originally, it was planned for the Odesa City Public Library and the museum of the Society of History and Antiquities. Designed in the Neoclassical style, the building harmoniously integrated into the Duma Square ensemble.

Present day

Today, the building houses the Odesa Archaeological Museum of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, one of the country’s oldest research institutions of archaeological profile. The architectural monument of national significance has fully preserved its original exterior architectural forms.
