This collectible Soviet postcard from 1968 depicts the obelisk monument dedicated to the heroes of the defense of Luhansk in April 1919, erected on the historic Ostra Mohyla hill.

What is shown on the postcard

The image shows a reinforced concrete obelisk standing at the top of the Ostra Mohyla mound. A wide staircase leads down from the monument, with visitors walking down. The facade of the memorial is faced with red tiles and features an inscription in metal letters: ‘Памяти героев обороны Луганска 1919 год’ (To the Memory of the Heroes of the Defense of Luhansk 1919). The retaining walls are built of rubble stone, and a small archway is visible near the entrance.

Historical note

The defense of Luhansk in April 1919 was a key episode of the Civil War in the region, during which local workers defended positions against the advancing forces of General Denikin. The memorial at Ostra Mohyla began to take shape during the Soviet era. The obelisk shown on the postcard was inaugurated in the 1960s as part of a larger complex honoring the fallen defenders of the city.

Present day

In subsequent decades, the Ostra Mohyla memorial complex underwent several renovations and was expanded with new monuments, including those dedicated to the events of World War II. Today, this historic site remains an important landmark of regional history.
