Historical note
The Shevchenko Museum building on Taras (Chernecha) Hill was constructed between 1935 and 1937 according to the design of architects Vasyl Krychevsky and Petro Kostyrko. The museum was officially opened in June 1939 to commemorate the 125th anniversary of the poet’s birth. The building suffered severe damage during World War II but was subsequently fully restored.
Present day
Today, the building serves as the centerpiece of the Shevchenko National Preserve. Between 2003 and 2010, the building underwent a major renovation that restored its interiors to their original color schemes based on Vasyl Krychevsky’s designs. The museum remains a key site for honoring the legacy of the Kobzar.
