What is shown on the postcard

The image shows a single-story museum building with a tiled roof and a distinctive semi-circular decorative arch over the main entrance. A bronze bust of the writer on a tall pedestal stands in front of the facade. The surrounding area is landscaped with blooming red rose beds, pathways, decorative trees, and shrubs. Several groups of visitors in summer attire are standing near the entrance.

Historical note

The Velyki Sorochyntsi Literary and Memorial Museum of Nikolai Gogol was opened in 1929 in the house of Dr. M. Trokhymovsky, where the writer was born. During World War II, the historical building was completely destroyed. The new museum building shown on the postcard was constructed according to the design of architect P. Chernykhov and opened to the public in 1951. The bust of Gogol in front of the building, created by sculptor Ilya Gintsburg, was cast and erected in Sorochyntsi in 1911, and later moved to the rebuilt museum site.

Present day

The museum continues to operate as an important cultural and tourist center in the Poltava region. The exhibition is dedicated to the writer’s life and work, as well as the history and ethnography of the region. The museum building and the monument to Gogol remain preserved in their historical appearance.
