Card Museum of Komsomol Glory, Dnepropetrovsk, 1983

This 1983 postcard features the Komsomol Glory Museum named after Alexander Matrosov in the city of Dnipropetrovsk (now Dnipro, Ukraine).

What is shown on the postcard

The image shows the main building of the Komsomol Glory Museum, constructed in the Soviet modernist style, featuring a distinctive multifaceted roof. The building’s facade bears the inscription ‘Komsomol Glory Museum named after Alexander Matrosov’. In front of the museum, there is a monumental sculpture, presumably dedicated to Alexander Matrosov, and a well-maintained area with paths and greenery. Several people can be seen strolling across the square.

Historical note

The Komsomol Glory Museum named after Alexander Matrosov was opened in Dnipropetrovsk in 1968, marking the 50th anniversary of the Komsomol. Its establishment was part of a large-scale campaign to immortalize the heroic history of the Komsomol movement and its members, such as Alexander Matrosov, a Hero of the Soviet Union who sacrificed himself by blocking an enemy bunker’s embrasure during the Great Patriotic War. The museum served as an important center for the ideological education of youth during the Soviet era.

Present day

Following the collapse of the Soviet Union and Ukraine’s independence, the functions and names of many institutions were revised. The building of the former Komsomol Glory Museum in Dnipro now houses the Central City Library named after Shota Rustaveli. The monument to Alexander Matrosov, which stood in front of the building, was dismantled as part of the decommunization policy. Thus, the historic building continues to serve public and cultural purposes, but with a different ideological orientation.
