What is shown on the postcard
The photograph shows the area in front of the museum building. In the foreground on the right stands the monument to Tsar Peter I on a granite pedestal. Historical note
The Museum of the History of the Poltava Battle was founded in 1909 on the initiative of Ivan Pavlovsky, a history teacher at the Poltava Cadet Corps, to mark the bicentennial of the battle. The monument to Peter I, created by sculptor Amandus Adamson, was originally erected in 1915 near the Cadet Corps building and was relocated to the museum grounds in 1950 during post-WWII restoration.
Present day
Today, the State Historical and Cultural Reserve ‘Poltava Battle Field’ remains active. While the museum building is preserved, monuments and exhibits related to the Russian Empire are being re-evaluated in line with Ukraine’s modern decolonization policies, and the monument to Peter I has been covered with protective structures.
