Historical note
The memorial in Shevchenko Park was opened on May 9, 1960, to honor Soviet sailors who died during the defense and liberation of Odesa during World War II. An Eternal Flame burns at the base of the obelisk. Since 1968, the “Post No. 1” honor guard has been active here, where local students stand guard.
Present day
The Monument to the Unknown Sailor and the Alley of Glory remain key memorial sites in Shevchenko Park. The surrounding area is well-maintained, and the platform near the obelisk serves as a viewing point overlooking the Gulf of Odesa.
