What is shown on the postcard

The postcard shows a cast-iron monument erected on a granite pedestal. At the top of the monument, a helmet sits upon a shield and sword. The front of the pedestal features a high-relief of a sleeping lion, with the coat of arms of the Russian Empire (double-headed eagle) positioned above it. In the background, a portion of the historic Poltava Regional Archive building is visible. In the foreground, a woman in a summer dress is seen looking at the monument.

Historical note

The monument was unveiled in 1849 to mark the 140th anniversary of the Battle of Poltava. It stands on the site of Cossack Magdenko’s house (the quarters of the fortress commandant A. S. Kelin), where Tsar Peter I stayed to rest after the battle. The monument was designed by the architect Alexander Brullov and cast in iron in St. Petersburg.

Present day

Today, the monument remains at its historical location at the intersection of Spasska and Pylypa Orlyka streets. During the Soviet period and after Ukraine’s independence, it was preserved as a cultural heritage site. The imperial Russian coat of arms on the monument has been subject to changes or removal as part of 21st-century decolonization processes.
