A double-view Soviet postcard from 1985, published in the Ukrainian SSR, depicting two memorial landmarks of Kherson: the Monument to the First Komsomols and the Eternal Flame.
What is shown on the postcard
The left side of the card features the tall vertical concrete stele of the Monument to the First Komsomols of the city, standing on a paved plaza surrounded by flowerbeds. The right side shows the Eternal Flame memorial complex with a youth guard of honor standing next to the ceremonial flame burner.
Historical note
The Monument to the First Komsomols in Kherson was unveiled in 1959 inside the Komsomolsky Park to commemorate the city’s early youth organizations. The Eternal Flame at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier is part of the Memorial of Glory dedicated to those who liberated the city during World War II. The honor guard (Post No. 1) at the flame was traditionally composed of selected local school students.
Present day
Under Ukrainian decommunization laws, the Komsomol monument in the Kherson Fortress Park (formerly Komsomolsky Park) was dismantled. The Memorial of Glory with the Eternal Flame remains a historical site dedicated to the memory of World War II victims, though its Soviet ideological framework has been removed.
