What is shown on the postcard
The left side of the postcard depicts the Monument to the First Cavalry Army: two expressive figures of horsemen charging through the air above a hill. In the foreground, a stone pedestal features a stylized Red Army helmet (budenovka) and a saber. The right side shows Olesko Castle situated atop a high green hill, surrounded by a meadow with haystacks under a clear blue sky.
Historical note
The Monument to the First Cavalry Army was unveiled in 1975 (sculptors V. Borysenko, M. Derehus, architect A. Konsulov). The metal structure weighing over 30 tons hovered over the Lviv–Kyiv highway. Olesko Castle is one of the oldest castles in Ukraine, first mentioned in 1327. In the 1970s, it underwent complete restoration and was opened as a museum-reserve.
Present day
In 2017, as part of decommunization laws, the Monument to the First Cavalry Army was completely dismantled, and its metal elements were put into storage. Olesko Castle continues to operate as a highly popular tourist destination and a branch of the Lviv National Art Gallery named after B.G. Voznytsky.
