Historical note
Designed by sculptor Matvey Manizer and architect Yevgeny Levinson, the monument was officially unveiled on March 6, 1939, to commemorate the 125th anniversary of Shevchenko’s birth. The monument is situated in the park opposite the Red Building of Kyiv University, which also bears Shevchenko’s name. Previously, this site held a monument to Russian Emperor Nicholas I, dismantled in 1920.
Present day
Today, the monument and the surrounding park are recognized cultural heritage sites of Ukraine. It remains a traditional venue for official state ceremonies, literary readings, and public gatherings.
