What is shown on the postcard

The photograph shows a full-length bronze monument of Grigory Konstantinovich (Sergo) Ordzhonikidze, set on a rectangular granite pedestal. In the background stands the multi-story administration building of the plant, featuring the sign ‘АЗОВСТАЛЬ’ (Azovstal) and the year ‘1961’ on its facade. A flower bed with blooming roses is laid out in front of the monument. Figures of people are visible near the entrance.

Historical note

The Azovstal iron and steel plant was established in the 1930s and was named after Sergo Ordzhonikidze during the Soviet era due to his role in industrializing the region. The monument in front of the headquarters symbolized the link between the enterprise and its historical namesake. The administration building shown on the postcard was commissioned in 1961, as indicated by the year on its facade.

Present day

In compliance with Ukrainian decommunization laws, the monument to G. K. Ordzhonikidze near the Azovstal administration building was dismantled in 2015. During the hostilities of 2022, the territory of the Azovstal plant, including its administrative buildings, suffered extensive destruction.
