What is shown on the postcard

The postcard captures a tall, four-sided red granite obelisk. At its base, youths in sailor uniforms stand on honorary guard. In the foreground plaza, park visitors, including adults and children, are walking. Green tree canopies frame the composition on both sides, with the open horizon of the Black Sea visible in the background. In the upper right corner, the inscription “ОДЕССА” is printed.

Historical note

The Monument to the Unknown Sailor was unveiled on May 9, 1960, to commemorate the Soviet soldiers who died during the defense of Odesa in 1941. The monument’s architects were G. Topuz and P. Tomilin, with sculptor M. Naruzetsky. The 21-meter-tall obelisk is made of red granite. The Eternal Flame burns at its base.

Present day

Today, the memorial remains one of Odesa’s key landmarks, situated in Shevchenko Park. The plaza around the monument serves as a popular viewing platform overlooking the Gulf of Odesa and the port.
